A Personal Appeal From Cofounder of Session - Chris McCabe
March 18, 2026 / Chris McCabe
Eight years ago, Session was founded with a mission to restore your privacy and give you control over your speech and life — in essence, digital freedom. However, without your help today, we won’t be able to continue developing Session for much longer. If you’ve ever found value in Session or its mission, please give me a moment of your time and read this appeal.
Session is controversial technology in a time when free speech is not a given, the right to privacy is abhorred, and the truth is a lie. Over the years, the organisations safeguarding Session have faced many challenges, but now Session’s very survival is at risk.
The threats against privacy are now greater than ever before, and Session must evolve to face the challenges of the future. Session’s current caretaker, the Session Technology Foundation, does not have the funding required to carry Session any further. Important work, such as PFS and post-quantum cryptography, is still in progress — and we don’t have enough time left.
Our mission is to bring back the freedom, creativity, and privacy that people once felt when communicating online. We’ve planted a seed for a truly free messenger that removes the censors, the surveillers, and the centralized entities that monitor your conversations. So far, that idea has worked. Every month, over 1,500,000 people use Session to send messages, not metadata.
Session is a platform that is built and owned by its community — not by big tech, private equity, or any other shadowy masters. Now, Session is turning to you.
The project is on a path to self-sustainability, but the future is fragile. If every Session user contributed just one dollar, it would go a long way towards Session reaching sustainability. If you've ever considered donating, now is the time to act.
